Refresh your Wellness Vision for the New Year

What are your wellness wishes for the upcoming year?  Imagine you were granted three wishes, what would they be?

  • Eat Healthier?
  • Move more?
  • Reach a Healthy Weight?

Looking at statistics of top New Year’s resolutions for the past years, these three made it on the list.  People are looking to improve their health with the advent of a new year. Perhaps, you might be feeling the same.  At the beginning of the year, your motivation is high coupled with excitement.  Unfortunately, motivation also wanes.  As a matter of fact, studies have shown –

“Less than 25% stay committed to their resolutions after just 30 days and only 8% accomplish them” 2018 Forbes article.

What’s more effective than New Year’s resolutions?  According to the article, set specific goals.

Before you Set Goals

However, before setting specific goals, I invite you to refresh your Wellness Vision!  If you’ve read my blog in the past year, I’ve emphasized the value of writing down a Wellness Vision.  A simple yet powerful statement, giving you the clarity of what matters most to you.  And its connection to your health and well-being.

The process of determining your vision involves deep self-reflection.  When I was first introduced to this concept of self-reflection and self-discovery,  I was hesitant to face my fears.  But, when I opened my heart, it also opened my eyes.  As a result, I saw possibilities of becoming the person who I was created to be.  A wondrous transformation inside and out, which is by the way, continues to be a work in progress.

Ask Why

When you write your Wellness Vision, seek the deeper meaning behind it.  Play the ‘‘Why Game’!  Keep asking why until your answer gives you profound insight of your truest desires.  Let me give you an example of how I applied this in my situation. A few years ago, I found out I was at risk for prediabetes and needed to make changes in my lifestyle to lower my risk.  For this reason, one change I desired was to reduce sugar intake.

Here’s the series of Whys, I asked myself:

  • Why should I reduce my sugar intake?  To lower my risk for prediabetes
  • Why do I want to lower my risk?  For optimal health and alleviate worry of risk for Type 2
  • Why do I want optimal health?  To have the energy to serve my family and my community

Ultimately, your wellness wishes connect with your values.  When your vision is aligned with your values, it becomes a powerful force.  One that leads to success with your wellness goals.
