How to Survive a Fitness Challenge!

Have you decided to tackle a Fitness Challenge? I’ve done a few in the past especially during the holidays to keep up my fitness regimen. I know the holidays are the busiest time of the year which makes the ‘Challenge’ even more challenging but at the same time most rewarding because you get to take care of you. If this is the first time you’ve tried a Fitness Challenge, the following tips will help you stick with it and follow through until the end.

IDENTIFY YOUR MOTIVATION

What is your driving force?  What is the WHY that will keep you going even when the going gets tough.

Whether it’s to jumpstart your fitness or to establish a habit, your why has to match with your values. Think in terms on how being fit impacts what you value most. For example, my family is on top of the list of things I value most.  I know when I don’t exercise, I feel moody and more lethargic which in turn negatively affects the way I interact with my kids.

PROPER PLANNING

Have a plan ready so you can get the job done especially when you’re short on time.

The day before, write out a plan to answer the questions –

1) What type of workout?

Examples – Go for a Run, a Walk, a Hike. Do a 30-min strength workout at the gym. Use a guided fitness app such as Gixo.

2) When?

Example – Morning before the family gets up or later in the afternoon for 15min during the kids’ screentime.

3) Where?

At the gym, at home, around a park.

VARY YOUR WORKOUTS

To avoid risk of injury or burn-out, try a variety of workouts. Alternate easy and hard days, change the mode of exercises and use different types of equipment if strength training (for example barbells, dumbbells, TRX, medicine balls, bodyweight, cable machines).

ONE DAY AT A TIME

The duration of a Fitness Challenge varies as it could be as short as 7 days or as long as 40 days, specifically for this year’s Holiday Fitness Streak Challenge.  40 days may sound daunting but if you only look ahead one day at a time, it definitely feels more achievable.

HAVE A SUPPORT SYSTEM

My husband and my kids are my rock.  Without their support, I wouldn’t have completed the previous challenges I’ve done.

It’s also great to be a part of  a community who are working to accomplish the same goal.  This is what we’ll do together in the Evoke Healthy Habits Facebook community.  We will encourage and support one another until the final day of the challenge!
